At least 42 families or 163 people have been evacuated from six barangays in four towns in Taal Volcano Island, Batangas province due to the threat posed by the restive Taal Volcano, disaster authorities said Friday.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said 12 families or 51 people are in two evacuation centers while 30 families (112 people) are staying with their relatives.
NDRRMC executive director Benito Ramos said the evacuated people included: 12 families or 51 people from Pulo Island, Talisay, one family or two people now at Venancio Trinidad Memorial School; 11 families or 49 people from Barangay Alas-as in San Nicolas town; 25 families or 95 people from Barangay Looc, San Sebastian and Sala in Balete; and 5 families or 17 people from Barangay Lumang Lipa in Mataas na Kahoy town.
Earlier, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said volcanic activity continued to intensify at Taal Volcano, with at least 16 volcanic quakes recorded in the last 24 hours. (PNA)
