PIA Davao del Sur: A year after the enactment of the Rice Tariffication Law, the Department of Agriculture in the region has already distributed 101,484 bags of palay seeds (at 20 kilos per bag) to 33,215 rice farmers.
The seeds were planted to 50,786 hectares in 34 rice growing cities/municipalities in the region, DA-XI Regional Technical Director for operations Marila L. Corpuz reported during a press conference in line with the observance of the 1st anniversary of the RTL early today in Matanao town, this province.
Corpuz said that the positive results of the initial phase of the RTL implementation will be felt by the farmers during harvest time.
The standing crops in Magsaysay, considered to be the rice granary in the province, are expected to be harvested few days from now, she added.
The distribution of certified and high quality seeds from the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) is one of the components of RTL.
Another distribution of five varieties of seeds is scheduled 3rd week of April. (Carina L. Cayon)
