Police operatives manning a Commission on Elections (Comelec) checkpoint arrested a man and a woman in possession of several sticks of dynamites and materials used in dynamite making here on Sunday.
Chief Inspector Sofronio Bayan, deputy chief of police of Bauang town, identified the suspects who were on board a taxi that came from Baguio, as Josephine Atiwag Omiheg, 41, and Edwin Marzan, 28, taxi driver, both of Upper Irisan in Baguio City.
Seized from the two were at least 40 pieces of dynamite, four pieces of suspected potassium nitrate with gasoline and three rolls of time fuse, which were found by lawmen in the taxi's compartments.
The taxi was intercepted at a checkpoint along the Naguilian Road in Barangay Ballay, Bauang, La Union.
Lawmen believed the dynamites and explosive–making materials may have been pilfered from a mining company in Benguet.
The suspects told the police that the explosives and other materials will be used in blasting rocks to provide the right-of-way for a proposed road construction in Alilem, Ilocos Sur.
The suspects were subsequently detained while their cargo of dynamites and explosive materials are now under the custody of the police operatives in Bauang, La Union.
Appropriate charges are now being readied against the two. (PNA)
