COTABATO CITY -- Two fishermen engaged in illegal fishing were injured on Friday morning after the dynamite they were using to fish, prematurely exploded.
Abdul Marudin, a sitio leader in the coastal village of Kalanganan here, identified the seriously wounded fishermen as Datu and his uncle, Mahdi, both surnamed Matabalao, both residents of the village.
“They are now recuperating at the Cotabato Regional and Medical Center (CRMC) due to serious injuries,” Marudin said at the hospital on Saturday.
Marudin said the duo was fishing at the “Bucana” (mouth) of Rio Grande de Mindanao when three improvised dynamites prematurely exploded while hidden inside the wooden banca at 11 a.m.
Other fishermen rescued the two and rushed them to the CRMC.
Police investigation showed the victims have manufactured explosives fashioned from ammonium nitrate, gasoline, and sulfur.
Dynamite fishing is prohibited under local laws but most fishermen still use it since law enforcement appears to be weak in the coast of this city and in neighboring Maguindanao province.
“While they regularly use dynamites, the risk was so great that one of them lost an arm while the other sustained serious injuries in the face,” Marudin said.
Col. Michael Lebanan, city police director, has immediately ordered the local police to monitor manufacturers of dynamite used in fishing to save lives and preserve marine life. (PNA)
