Bureau of Customs Davao district collector lawyer Martiniano Bangcoy said it would be the BOC's gain if Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte would accept the offer of the President to be the Customs Commissioner.
“But it would also be Davao’s loss since Duterte has been known to be a leader with political will, making the city a peaceful and progressive one,†he added.
Duterte confirmed that he was recently offered by President Benigno Simeon Aquino III the top post at the Customs bureau, whose current commissioner, Rozzano Rufino Biazon, is part of the senatorial line-up of the ruling Liberal Party (LP).
However, Duterte reportedly asked President Aquino to allow him a few days to think it over.
Duterte has been offered Cabinet positions in the past but he turned down all of them.
Former President Joseph Estrada wanted him to be secretary of the Department of National Defense.
The Interior and Local Government secretary position was offered to him by three presidents - Fidel V. Ramos, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, and Aquino. But he was quick to turn down the offers.
“This is the truth. I thought of those positions for quite some time but I said I am not interested," he was quoted as saying.
Duterte said he was not keen on accepting any national position.
“I am not fit for them. Again, I never aspired for any national prominence position though I am a supporter of the President. I would love to serve the people but I never look beyond the boundaries of Davao City," he said.
