NOVEMBER 2017-DUMAGUETE CITY – Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo is hoping that the city government will be able to host the Batang Pinoy 2018 national competition, possibly in April next year, after the success of the first hosting last week of the Batang Pinoy 2017 Visayas regional qualifiers here.

Remollo, on Monday, said he did not expect that the city delegation would get the No. 2 position in gold medal standing, surpassing even highly favored teams.

He said his administration will be working very hard for the sake of the athletes as part of his contribution to the national government’s campaign against illegal drugs. 

Dumaguete City, it was observed, was on the verge of being the overall champion in the regional qualifiers but it was short of winning gold medals in the dance sport event, where Cebu City showed dominance.

The mayor was told the dancesport team of Dumaguete had withdrawn.  

Another event that the city would like to further develop its athletes is chess, where he believes a lot of individual medals can be won.

In January next year, Dumaguete City is expecting some 3,000 young athletes for children’s games in coordination with the Philippine Sports Commission.

Remollo said this is a unique sporting event because children will play traditional Filipino games like “takyan,” marbles, sack race, “luksong-tinik,” and “tubig-tubig,” to name a few.

In February next year, the Department of Education (DepEd) is also coming up with a big event where at least 5,000 students will converge in Dumaguete for a display of talents in a cultural competition.

But before the year ends, Remollo said Sen. Pia Cayetano is expected to bring in women soccer teams hopefully by December.

As for the incentives for gold medalists in the recent Batang Pinoy, Remollo said he will endorse the same to the city council. (PNA)
