The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) on Monday held a caravan in the southern town of Argao, Cebu City for its Diskwento Back to School Promo program.
The program, which was designed to help the public cope with price hikes in commodities due to rising fuel prices, allows consumers to buy not only discounted school supplies, but also processed foods for their children’s snacks.
Business establishments like Julie’s Bakeshop, Cebu Bazaar, National Bookstore and Liawayway Marketing joined the caravan.
Among the program’s participating stores are Happy Mart, Aji-ichiban in Ayala and SM City Cebu, Converse in Banilad Town Center, Fooda Saversmart and White Gold.
DTI has noted an increase of two to five percent in the prices of school supplies, base don their monitoring.
â€As expected, every year, there is an increase in prices,†Gladys Oro, DTI 7 trade and industry specialist, said.
Oro pointed out that the prices of school supplies also depend on the quality.
She also advised parents to look into the chemical contents of ballpoint pens and pencils, which may contain toxic chemicals.
Although the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) are monitoring the lead content of pencils, parents should check the products themselves, Oro said.
Th EcoWAste Coalition, an environmental group, has called on officials of the Department of Education to be on the lookout for the distribution of foods containing di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate or DEHP.
