Robbers strike even during the Holy Week.
On Good Friday,
Butuan City police arrested Joselito Macanas, single and resident of Purok 11, Barangay Obrero, for stealing a steel manhole cover inside the church compound of the Mormons located in Andaya Subdivision, Barangay Port Poyohon this city.
Police said the heavy steel manhole cover was owned by the Church of the Latter Day Saints (Mormons Church) and was about to be sold by Macanas and a certain alias "Babay" Talan to Sabo Junk Shop located at Montilla Boulevard, Butuan City when nabbed.
Police said Macanas and Talan destroyed the concrete pavement of the church to pull out the steel cover.
It was when the suspects were on the way to the junk store when intercepted by police, who acted on
tips of a civilian that two men were stealing the steel manhole cover.
Police said only Macanas was arrested since Talan was able to escape.
Stealing of steel manhole covers, electric posts’ copper wires, steel kabilyas of concrete pavements of public roads increased over the years here in Butuan City and Caraga Region.
In another development, a man, armed with a handgun, barged into Triple A Rice and Corn store at Ong Yiu Building along Langihan road, Barangay Holy Redeemer, Butuan City on Holy Thursday and carted away the day's earnings of about P15,000.
Butuan City police said the unidentified suspect poked his handgun on Rhea Jane Olila, 17, Triple A's cashier, and forcibly took the store's
earnings for the day.
The suspect then fled aboard an XRM motorcycle, without plate number and driven by a companion.
