The city government has been offered to be a recipient of an animal protection and control program that is intended to control dog population in the city.
City Veterinarian Dr. Mario Arriola said the city is now preparing a proposal to avail of the program offered by the Humane Society International (HIS) with three barangays — San Roque, Tetuan and Sta. Maria as pilot areas.
HSI-India Director Dr. Rahul Segahl, who was in the city for an orientation and hands-on demonstration on quick spay and neuter procedure recently, has committed to shoulder the necessary drugs for the surgery that will remove an animal’s reproductive organ. Veterinary drops for 5,000 dogs have been committed initially.
Arriola said the HSI program is a procedure on surgery or sterilization that will take less than 10 minutes per animal.
The swift procedure, he stressed will lessen expenses for anesthetics being used for hysterectomy (for female animals) and neuter (for male animals).
“This will help in the program to control dog population,†the city veterinarian said, adding that the procedure will eventually lead dogs to lose sex drive because of lack of hormones. - PNA
