DLSU D joins global fight to end impunity

NOVEMBER 2017 DASMARIÑAS CITY, Cavite - The De La Salle University (DLSU), through its Communication Journalism Department (CJD), has launched a month-long advocacy campaign, dubbed “Communication Impact 2017,” this month until Dec. 1 on journalists’ safety, issues on impunity, risks and hazards faced by the media sector.

DLSU campaign chair Prof. NornelynCachuela and co-chair Prof. Angie Quadra-Balibay have spearheaded the campus activities videos, documentaries, posters, exhibits and lectures as well as through online articles and social media pages.

In a statement, the university’s CJD chair Prof. Artin Umali said that “the fight to end impunity will not stop with the campaign” as the campus advocacy on journalists’ safety supports the global fight to end impunity.

Umali added that the university shall continue to develop and organize relevant activities that will raise more awareness among the students, faculty and staff.

DLSU-D has also collaborated with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in incorporating Journalism Safety in the school’s curriculum.

Campus exhibits are now open such as the “La Sallian NEWS-EUM Wall of Liberty: Freedom of the Press”and  “Emerge and See.”

DLSU-D alumni who are now media practitioners Ron Gagalac and Jeff Caparas are featured in their exhibit while “must do” information are also posted on six different specialized emergency kits during an earthquake, fire, typhoon/flood, survival, food poisoning and basic emergencies.

Another exhibit on “Futuristic Safety Gears and Attire for Journalists” will be mounted on Tuesday (Nov. 21) while various documentaries and music videos about journalists’ safety and crimes committed against them dubbed as “Kaligtasan at Karapatan” will be shown at the Tanghalang Julian Felipe (TJF) from 1:30-2:30 p.m.

A unique Fashion Expo “DIY Journalist Safety Gear Expo 2017” features the ‘Do-It-Yourself’ (DIY) on journalist gear/apparel to ensure safety during any coverage will also be exhibited at TJF from 2:30 p.m to 5:30 p.m.

Marketing Communications Office, under Prof RosanniRecreo-Sarile organized the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Seminar on Wednesday, where the DLSU-D community’s pledge for safety will be presented.

On Nov. 23, DLSU-D will host a forum on Journalism Safety and Fight Against Impunity featuring journalists who will be sharing their work experience at the TJF Auditorium from 2 to 5 pm.

Thursday’s (Nov. 23) highlights also include the Lighting of Candles at the JFH Grounds at 4 to 6 p.m in “Commemoration of the Maguindanao Massacre: #8YearsNoJustice” followed by a Prayer Vigil and the reading of the “Statements Against the Killing of Journalists” and tribute through video presentation to the slain journos.

On Dec. 1, the culminating activities include “ComQuest: Amazing Race” on journalism safety from 8 a.m. to 12 noon; university-wide “Bigkas 2.0” a ‘Spoken Word Contest’ on Lasallian creative poetic skills and the original “Bulag, Pipi at Bingi” stage play. (PNA)
