The First Division of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) central office in Manila has disqualified two mayoralty candidates in New Washington, Aklan.
The mayoralty candidates were Apollo Peralta and Welix Menez.
Report reaching the regional Comelec office based in Iloilo City said the disqualification stemmed from the same surname on the part of mayoralty aspirant Apollo and the incumbent mayor Edgar Peralta.
Atty. Ian Ananoria, Aklan Provincial Election Officer, said there’s a possibility that electorates might cast their votes to a wrong candidate of their own choice as a sort of mistaken identity.
On the other hand, Menez has been classified by the Comelec as a nuisance candidate.
The disqualification case against the two mayoral aspirants have been filed by Mayor Edgar Peralta, saying this would create confusion among voters because of their similar surname.
The incumbent mayor would only want to ensure that his votes will not mistakenly go to Apollo.
Mayor Peralta also clarified that he filed the disqualification case to protect the interest of the public and not for reason of personal interest. (PNA)
