Pulse on martial law is 'proof spirit of freedom is thriving'
MANILA, Jan. 12 (PNA) -- Filipinos live and breathe freedom.
This is the main reason why survey results of Pulse Asia showed that majority of Filipinos found that imposing martial law today is unnecessary, Sen. Francis “Kiko†Pangilinan said Thursday.
Results of the Pulse Asia survey showed that 74 percent of 1,200 survey respondents disagreed with the statement: “Candidly speaking, it may be necessary now to have martial law to solve the many crises of the nation.â€
Meanwhile, 12 percent agreed, and 14 percent were undecided. The survey was conducted last December 6 to 11, 2016.
“Bagama’t hindi pa rin natin nakakamit ang kalayaan mula sa kahirapan, kakulangan ng kita at pagkakataong umangat ang pamumuhay, ipinagdiriwang natin ang kalayaang patuloy nating bakahin ito para maabot ang ating potensyal bilang mga indibidwal at bilang isang bansa,†Pangilinan said.
(“Although we have yet to achieve freedom from poverty, lack of livelihood, and opportunities to raise our way of living, we continue to celebrate freedom which we continue to fight for until we reach our potential as individuals and as a country,†Pangilinan said.)
"This survey proves that we, as Filipinos, have not forgotten how the dictatorship killed the spirit of freedom," he added.
Meanwhile, Pangilinan also shared the sentiment of US Pres. Barack Obama in his farewell address on Wednesday that there are many threats to democracy.
"Democracy is never easy. But it's what makes freedom possible. It ensures that we have a say in how our government perform its sacred duty to fulfill all our rights as people and citizens so that we may achieve our fullest potential as individuals and as a nation," he added.
Under the Martial Law regime in the Philippines, which was imposed by the late Pres. Ferdinand Marcos in Sept. 21, 1972, several human rights abuses including torture and killing were cited in various reports.
The Supreme Court (SC) voted in favor of the burial of former Pres. Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (LNMB) despite opposition of several anti-Marcos groups. (PNA)
