The southern Cebu town of Minglanilla has the highest number of dengue patients in the province with 31 cases for the first quarter of 2012, according to the Regional Epidemiological Surveillance Unit (RESU).
However, the Department of Health (DOH) 7 revealed that cases for 2012 from January to March are 79.53 percent lower compared to the same period last year.
From January to March 2012, there were 312 cases and four deaths while 2011 has 1,524 cases with 14 deaths.
For Central Visayas, Dumaguete and Siaton of Negros Oriental top the list with 51 and 36 cases, respectively.
Talisay City ranked fourth with 26 cases, while Cebu City has 20 cases with one death.
The age range of cases is still between three months and 79 years old with both sexes almost equally represented.
However, 25 percent of patients are children between six and 10 years old.
Despite the low number of cases, health officials recommended to local government officials to intensify the information campaign on dengue with emphasis on the importance of eliminating breeding sites of mosquitoes and to mobilize the community of participate in environmental sanitation activities such as clean-up drives.
DOH 7 is also continuing information drives to different areas in the region.
Officials are also encouraged to organize dengue brigades in barangays, to continue disease surveillance and to notify Resu on dengue cases.
A patient who suffers from dengue has high fever, body weakness, abdominal pain, vomiting and in worst cases, nose bleeding from internal hemorrhage.
The dengue virus is transmitted form one person to another by an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito, which thrives in clean and stagnant water.
