Cebu City’s two members in the House of Representatives said they will apportion some of their Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) to extend financial assistance to informal settlers who will be affected by City Hall’s demolition of illegal structures along creeks and rivers.
Rep. Tomas Osmeña (South District) will use P6 million of his PDAF for this purpose.
Rep. Rachel del Mar did not give a fixed amount, but said her office usually gives between P1,000 and P2,000 per family.
Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama welcomed the move of the city’s legislators.
“It’s a good thing that they are now coming in because that’s what I have been telling, that let’s all be one in addressing this problem,†he said
Councilor Alvin Dizon, who chairs the council’s committee on housing, said guidelines will be formulated in the giving of cash aid to ensure it will not be abused.
Dizon said giving financial aid to informal settlers will not encourage more people to settle in the city.
“Rather, this is a concrete example of the city’s commitment to ensure the welfare of its constituents. These people have been living in this city for more than 10 years and contribute significantly to our economy as workers, laborers and small entrepreneurs,†he said.
