Two soldiers were wounded in a brief gunbattle Saturday between government security forces and communist-New People’s Army (NPA) rebels at Sitio Caningag, Barangay Cabasagan, Boston, Davao Oriental, military reported Monday.
Military report also said the gunbattle took place at 4:50 p.m.
“The troops belonging to the 67th Infantry Battalion were on patrol responding to the civilian complaints on the presence of armed bandits roaming around their place. However, upon arrival, they were fired upon by the bandits,†said Lt Col Lyndon Paniza, spokesman of the Army’s Southern Mindanao 10th Infantry (Agila) Division.
“These groups of NPAs are the same group responsible for murdering innocent civilians,†said Col. Paniza.
Lt. Col. Ruben Basiao, commanding officer of the 67th Infantry Battalion, said these armed bandits are also the ones roaming around the province of Davao Oriental, and some parts of Monkayo, Compostela Valley (ComVal) province, not only to harass the military and police camps but also to conduct extensively their extortion activities on small and big business companies, arson of road construction equipment and privately-owned trucks last 2009 and 2010.
“We will continue to seize these bandits who are keeping on their atrocities to destroy peace and development efforts in the area because the civilians do not want bandits and criminals in their communities,†said Col. Basiao.
The 30-minute exchange of fire on Saturday resulted to two soldiers slightly injured but were treated immediately by the troop’s first aiders.
The two are now confined at Camp Panacan Station Hospital here. (PNA)
