Davao fashion designers cry foul over non-inclusion in Ms. Universe fashion show

DAVAO CITY, Dec. 14 (PNA) -- Fashion designers here cried foul over their non-inclusion in the Ms. Universe fashion show in Davao City that will feature Mindanao Fabrics and Tapestry.
"We are very concerned about this. Why are we not included when it is being held in Davao and they will be featuring Mindanao fabrics," designer Alfonso Guinoo said during Wednesday's Habi at Kape forum.
He said Davao designers are more than capable of designing the clothes that will be worn by the Ms. Universe candidates, thus making him wonder why the local designers are not protected.
We have talented people here, he said, but none of the local designers have been tapped for the fashion show.
"Parang everything was done secretly almost finished na ang mga clothes nila," he said.
Guinoo feels they are being kicked-out from their own city.
According to him, they have already spoken to Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo but were only told she had no hand in choosing the designers.
Dodji Batu of the Davao Fashion and Design Council Foundation said they are very disappointed.
"Our members are multi-awarded here and internationally and we are usually contacted by Manila people before they come here," he said.
Batu said they were sent fillers that the fashion show will push through but with a proposal for Davao designers to only dress up local models in a pre-fashion show in the cocktail area before the fashion show.
While they do not want to claim that all the designs be given to them, he said this is a slap on the face of the Davao designers.
"There is a legit group but there was no consultation," he said, admitting that they received a message from Manila designer Rene Salud extending invitation but only for those who will approve the condition of the proposal.
He said they told the Manila people about their disappointment but the meeting did not push through after that. (PNA)
