THE 17th City Council is expected to pass a resolution to enact an ordinance prohibiting the sale of junk foods within school premises.
Councilor Rachel Zozobrado, in a copy of the proposed resolution, said an ordinance should be passed requiring all public and private schools to prohibit selling of junk foods inside the canteens/cafeterias or within the 100 meters school parameter zone.
"This is to ensure that the students get the most nutrition that they can," she said.
She said junk foods are still being sold and served to students in school canteens and cafeterias, as well as by ambulant vendors outside the schools.
“There have been an increasing number of malnourished and undernourished children in our city,†the councilor said, adding that junk food have a large contribution on this.
“The term junk food refers to food perceived to have little or no nutritional value, products with nutritional value but contain ingredients considered unhealthy when eaten on a regular basis or products passing as food, considered unhealthy to consume at all,†the proposed resolution read.
It added that, “Junk foods are typically ready to eat convenience food containing high levels of saturated fats, salt or sugar and little or no fruit vegetables or dietary fiber.â€
Once approved, the item will be referred to the Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Arts and Culture.
