Another vehicular tragedy was prevented Friday when a minibus carrying mostly students was prevented by a firmly-rooted pine tree from plummeting into a ravine in Dalaguete town, 85 km south of Cebu City.
Insp. Bonifacio Lucerna, chief of the Dalaguete Police Station said, said mini-bus NB Boy with 35 persons on board, mostly vocational students bound for a spiritual retreat, was maneuvering uphill on a zigzag road at 10 a.m. on Friday when the engine overheated and the radiator exploded.
About 13 persons were slightly hurt after they jumped off the bus.
The bus rolled backward and the efforts of the driver’s helper to stop the bus by blocking the wheel with a rock proved futile, Lucerna said.
The bus continued to roll toward the ravine when its rear portion rammed into a pine tree that was planted by a resident several years ago, he added.
Lucerna noted that without the pine tree, the bus would have fallen into the deep ravine beside the road and several lives would have been lost.
The passengers of the mini-bus included 29 vocational students, two facilitators and the spiritual director of the Don Bosco Technology Center in Barangay Labangon, Cebu City who were bound for a retreat in the school’s retreat house in Mantalongon, Dalaguete.
