SAN PEDRO, Laguna – Police rescued at least 19 dogs on Friday from two men allegedly engaged in the illegal dog meat trade.
Supt. Chito Bersaluna, San Pedro chief of police identified the suspects as Ronette Medina, 35, and Benjamin Abante, 25, both residents of Barangay San Roque in San Pedro, Laguna. They were apprehended along the national highway in Barangay Landayan when the cops made a routine check of a van they found to be suspicious.
During inspection, authorities were surprised to see 68 dogs inside improvised cages, 49 of which are already dead.
Medina confessed that they got the dogs from the towns of Binan, Sta. Rosa, and San Pedro to be sold in Baguio City.
Bersaluna said the remaining 19 dogs alive were turned-over to Dr. Roland Arcia, head veterinarian of the Animal Kingdom Foundation, the local affiliate of the International Wildlife Coalition Trust based in the United Kingdom.
The suspects are now detained at the local police detention cell pending investigation and filing of appropriate charges in court.
