The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and local government units (LGUs) on Tuesday stepped up their effort to assist highlanders, particularly Mamanwa tribesmen who fled their homes last May 31 in Sitio Zapanta Valley in Kitcharao, Agusan del Norte due to armed clashes between the military and the New People's Army (NPA).
Army troops of the 4th Infantry Division (4th ID) and LGUs redoubled their effort on Tuesday in extending food assistance and other needs of Mamanwa families now temporarily sheltered at Sitio Bacud in Barangay Luna, Surigao City.
Troops from the 402nd Infantry Brigade under Col. Rodrigo Diapana together with the 30th Infantry Battalion and 42nd Civil-military Operations Company facilitated the distribution of 20 gallons of water for the internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Sitio Bacud on Tuesday.
Diapana said the Army, LGUs and non-government organizations in the area assisted in making the temporary settlement of the IDPs more livable.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Mamanwa families of Sitio Zapanta Valley, Agusan del Norte revealed that they really want to return back home.
“We really want to go home because we already missed our herd most especially our farm," said Datu Anlagan, the Mamanwa tribal leader, in the vernacular.
However, the Philippine Army’s 402nd Brigade commander said that they are committed to resolving this situation immediately so that the IDPs would be able to return to their respective homes as soon as possible.
