DAGUPAN CITY -- The town mayor of Binmaley is seeking confirmation from the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) that its men struck a natural gas vein while they were digging for a shallow well in Barangay Pallas, Binmaley two months ago.

"As mayor of Binmaley, I want to get confirmation to this kind of report," Mayor Simplicio Rosario said in an open forum during the Irrigation Stakeholders' Forum at CSI Stadia here Wednesday noon.

Rosario was among the town mayors in Pangasinan who attended the forum graced by NIA Director General Ricardo Visaya, former chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

The mayor said the natural gas was reportedly found by NIA personnel while digging a well in a rice field owned by a farmer in Barangay Pallas, Binmaley for irrigation purposes.

"I am not yet positive about the report but if it is really true, then the local government must inform the proper government agency," he said.

Rosario was referring to the Department of Energy (DOE), which, he said, must conduct a technical study on the natural gas find.

This was not the first report on alleged discovery of natural gas in a ricefield in Binmaley.  (PNA)
