Negros Occidental farmers' coop asks NIR-TWG to establish admin center at Dacongcogon sugar mill complex
BACOLOD CITY, July 2 (PNA) -- The Dacongcogon Farmers Producers Cooperative led by lawyer Rolando Parpa Sr. is calling on the Negros Island Region-Technical Working Group (NIR-TWG) to set up the regional administrative center in Barangay Tabugon, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.
The proposed site is where the Dacongcogon sugar mill is located, said Parpa, who chairs the cooperative, in a press statement.
The mill has ceased its operations several years back.
He noted that the sugar mill served as economic center for the farmers at the common hinterlands of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, adding that the milling facility was a backbone of the economy for the 10,000-member cooperative for the past 40 years.
Parpa added that the sugar mill management has established road networks from the hinterland boundaries of the two Negros provinces towards the sugar central.
These traditional routes will provide convenient access to the public who may transact business at the regional center, he said.
Parpa also said the construction of new, or rehabilitation of roads toward Barangay Tabugon will provide farmers access to the markets and will also trigger development in agriculture.
Moreover, Parpa said they are asking Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel Roxas II to intercede with President Benigno S. Aquino III to act on their request for assistance to revive operations of the Dacongcogon sugar mill.(PNA)
