THE Iloilo City government, in cooperation with the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ), is eyeing a comprehensive clean air action plan that will eventually become the basis of the city's clean air code.
Engr. Niel Hechanova, city environment and natural resources officer, said that city stakeholders participated a three-day action planning and consultation on October 19-21, 2009 that will lead to a road map towards a clean air plan for Iloilo City based on the provisions of Republic Act (RA) 8749 or the Clean Air Act of 1999.
GTZ has included Iloilo as one of the key cities in the Asean region to serve as a jump-off point of clean air planning. The other Philippines cities are Metro Manila cities, Cebu and Davao.
The GTZ participants in the Iloilo City workshop are Roland Haas, Ms. Napoporn Yuberk, Phil Sayed, Dr. Axel Friedrich, Rudolf Petersen, and lawyer Glynda Bathan.
The Clean Air Act was a landmark legislation signed into law on June 23, 1999 by then President Joseph Estrada, providing "a comprehensive air pollution control policy and for other purposes."
