PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan -- The 20th Cine Europa, which carries the theme "Where Classics and Contemporary Meet", will hold free public screenings of 24 Europe-based films at SM City Puerto Princesa on December 1-3.
The longest and largest film festival in the Philippines formally opened at the Shangri-La Plaza on Sept. 16, said SM City Puerto Princesa public relations officer Russell Fernandez on Wednesday afternoon.
In this year’s installment of Cine Europa, the old and the new merge to give Filipinos an opportunity to appreciate the rich artistry and culture of Europe, Fernandez said.
Twenty-four award-winning films from such European Union (EU) countries as Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, and Norway will give moviegoers a fascinating experience to learn more about European culture and values.
Cine Europa began in 1997, stemming from the friendship between the Philippines and the EU.
The Palawan State University also hosted some of the featured films last November 27-29.
Among the 24 films to be shown are “Souvenir”, the story of a long-retired singer whose career is revived by love in the form of a young boxer; “Babettes Gæstebud” (Babette's Feast), which follows the story of Babette, a Parisian fugitive following the 1871 Commune of Paris uprising, as she changes the lives of the villagers who took her in; and Sweden’s “The Girl, The Mother and the Demons”, which tells the tale of Ti, who can neither hear nor see the spirits or demons her mother claims to hear and see in the apartment where they reside.
