The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Region 9 and the Philippine Center on Transnational Crime (PCTC) Mindanao field office have rescued 24 human trafficking victims in this city and in the province of Tawi-Tawi.

A CIDG-9 report disclosed that nine of the 24 victims were rescued Monday at the port of Zamboanga while the 15 others in Bongao, the capital town of Tawi-Tawi.

They were supposed to travel in one group but were divided into two to avoid detection from government authorities watching against human trafficking at the local port.

The CIDG-9 said that most of the victims are from Luzon, particularly from Benguet, Isabela, La Union and Pangasinan while some are from Mindoro.

Investigation showed that the victims were recruited to work as domestic helpers in Singapore and were to travel via Malaysia.

Those rescued in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi arrived in this city Monday afternoon aboard a commercial vessel.

They are now under the care of the Zamboanga Seabased Anti-Trafficking Task Force. - source: PNA
