CEBU CITY -- The Commission on Human Rights’ office in Central Visayas (CHR-7) did not find enough technicalities that would merit an investigation on the deaths of two infants in Lapu-Lapu City after receiving a pentavalent vaccine last week.
However, CHR-7 chief investigator Leo Villarino said Thursday they are ready to help the victims’ families should they seek assistance.
Villarino said all they could do to help for now is to monitor how the Department of Health (DOH) is conducting its investigation to determine the real cause of the infants’ death.
Families of four-month-old Ghirvaughn Mereign Limpangog and three-month-old Ayesha Mae Suson blamed the vaccine administered to the babies at the Barangay Pajac Health Center as the cause of their death.
Ariel Igoy, grandfather of one of the babies who died three days after receiving the vaccine on Nov. 8, said Wednesday he would ask the help of CHR-7 after DOH-7 ruled that the deaths were not caused by the children’s vaccination.
DOH-7 Regional Director Dr. Jaime Bernadas on Wednesday said that their initial investigation showed that Limpangog and Suson died of pre-existing illnesses, as indicated in their death certificates.
However, Igoy said they want the DOH to dig deeper into their investigation, especially on the vaccine’s side effects and how it was administered.
The pentavalent vaccine is given to children to prevent them from contracting diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, hepatitis B, and haemophilus influenza type B, which can cause pneumonia and meningitis. (PNA)
