CEBU CITY -- Newly-installed Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff, Gen. Rey Leonardo Guerrero, on Tuesday ordered his men in the Central Command (CentCom) to solve the insurgency problem in the Visayas at the soonest time possible.
Guerrero, who graced the 16th founding anniversary celebration of the AFP CentCom in Camp Lapu-Lapu here, specifically addressed his order to the AFP personnel stationed in Western and Eastern Visayas, urging them to continue their efforts in neutralizing the communist insurgency in their areas.
He also urged the AFP in Central Visayas not to be complacent as they also need to address the remaining rebel threat in Negros Oriental.
Guerrero told his men that President Rodrigo Duterte’s directive to the AFP is “very simple” and easy to follow, which is to wipe out insurgents and terrorist groups in the country immediately.
The AFP chief also lauded the CentCom for the capture of alleged high-ranking New People’s Army (NPA) official Rustico “Paking” Tan in Santander, Cebu last Thursday.
Tan was arrested by virtue of 14 warrants of arrest issued in Bohol and Negros Occidental for multiple, frustrated, and attempted murder cases.
Members of Karapatan-Cebu, meanwhile, said Tan, a 76-year-old former priest, is no longer an active member of the NPA and that he used to be a peace negotiator between the communist rebels and the government during the time of the late president Corazon Aquino.
However, authorities claimed Tan is still an active official of the NPA, as shown by the more than a dozen warrants of arrest. (PNA)
