Cebu Philippines News: Dengue Outbreak
« on: September 30, 2010, 02:12:57 PM »
As three barangays in Cebu City out of the total six barangays in the region have been declared with dengue epidemic outbreak, the Department of Health (DOH-7) is trying to fast track the purchase of chemically treated mosquito nets that is hopefully seen to combat the rising incidence of dengue cases.
DOH-7 Regional Director Dr. Susana Madarieta said a budget of P2.4M has been allocated by their office for the purchase of the treated nets which will benefit the three declared'outbreak' barangays --- Guadalupe, Labangon and Tisa.

Guadalupe and Labangon as well as Tisa in Cebu City have the highest number of dengue cases in Cebu City which prompted the DOH-7 to declare these areas with "dengue outbreak."
"We are declaring a dengue outbreak in the barangays of Guadalupe, Labangon and Tisa in Cebu City as cases in these areas have reached more than the epidemic threshold level," Madarieta claimed.
Data taken from the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit's (RESU-7) as of Sept. 25 on dengue updates, Barangay Guadalupe recorded 154 dengue cases followed by Barangay Labangon with 84 cases and Tisa with 102 cases placing these areas under the outbreak category.

Madarieta bared six other barangays in the city are also on the possible list to be declared under the outbreak category namely Lahug, Hipodromo, Talamban, Mabolo, Apas, and Mambaling.

Currently, 8,706 dengue cases have been recorded in Central Visayas with 63 deaths although the case fatality rate is.7 percent which is quite low compared to last year's number of deaths which was recorded at 1.4 percent, Madarieta said.

The other three barangays that were declared under the outbreak category are Barangays Cogon and Dao in Tagbilaran City, Bohol and Barangay Daro in Dumaguete City, Ngeors Oriental.

Out of the total figure of dengue cases, Cebu City had the highest number with 2,369 dengue cases with 16 deaths followed by Tagbilaran City with 503 cases and six deaths and third, Dumaguete City with 347 cases with two reported fatalities.

Madarieta said the money is ready and that they are just waiting for the bidding to be finish as she added that she will asked the Awards Committee to fast track the bidding process.

Madarieta said the treated nets which are effective for five years will be placed in the windows and doors of public elementary schools in the three city baranagys. The nets not only ward off the mosquitoes but onc these mosquitoes come in contact with the net, they will die so it has a double-purpose.

The DOH-7 regional director admitted that they do not have sufficient funds to provide other affected dengue barangays with the treated nets as she recommended the other barangays to use their calamity funds to acquire the medicated curtains. -source: PIA
