The Cebu City Government has set aside P80 million for environmental projects in its P900 million fifth supplemental budget.
Cebu City Councilor Jose Daluz, who chairs the council’s committee on budget and finance, said, aside from the P100 million for the city-wide asphalt storm, the proposed fifth supplemental budget (SB) will include funds intended for eco-management.
Daluz also said the next SB will cover P100 million for road concreting and P17 million for the purchase of uniforms for all barangay officials and employees.
For the environment, Councilor Nida Cabrera, who chairs the council’s committee on environment, said she has proposed to include in the next SB the purchase of several equipments for plastic trading and for the purchase of motorcycles with sidecars to be sued by the barangays to pick up biodegradable waste.
Cabrera said she also incorporated funds to support the continuing establishment of material recovery facilities (MRF) as well as composting sites in the different barangays of the city.
Cabrera said out of the 80 villages, there are 25 functional MRFs in the city. MRFs are used to reduce the amount of garbage brou8ght to Inayawan Sanitary Landfill and o remove the stench there.
City Treasurer Ofelia Oliva said they are still finalizing the source for the funds.
She said she is waiting for city Budget Officer Nelfa Briones’ itemized proposed expenditure for the SB so that she can identify the source of funds for the additional budget.
Aside from asphalt storm, road concreting, environment and uniform allocations, city Hall’s next SB covers also electrification and a waterworks system for the mountain barangays, P30 million for the City’s Hospitalization and Medical Assistance Program (Chap), P20 million additional funds for the renovation of Plaza Independencia and P8 million for the purchase of rice to be distributed to barangay workers.
