CEBU, Philippines - Due to the prolonged El Niño phenomenon, the faithful will come to unite in praying the obligatory prayer requesting for downpour as the Archdiocese of Cebu recently publicizes the “Oratio Imperata” — a prayer for rain.

The Catholic Church wanted to emphasize that the communal prayer is regarded as “unique” since it was brought forth owing to the constant requests of various sectors in the community.

“This is one prayer that was requested. I think the Church cannot refuse that since it is a request from the majority. The Church, being the Mother of the multitude, we will have to provide the prayer that is needed,” said Cebu Archdiocesan spokesperson Monsignor  Joseph Tan.

The obligatory prayer, affirmed by Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma, is an adaptation from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines’ communal prayers dated August 2007 and February 2010.

 Tan said in an interview with reporters that their initial plan was to publish the prayer in a weekly newsletter of the Archdiocese of Cebu, “Ang Bag-ong Lungsoranon.”

However, he said some religious members suggested providing copies of the prayer in the Archbishop Palace where local parishes can get a copy.

Tan said further that once the local parishes could take hold of the copy, they can apply it right away.

“As soon as possible, mahimong karon na magamit na ang pag-ampo pero I think mas madungog ni sa kadaghanan karon nang Domingo kay maoy tingsimba sa kadaghanan,” he said.

He said communal prayer asking for rain will have to be recited until such time the request is granted.

“Kanang ulan nga makabungog jud nga maoy motambal sa problema nato sa tubig o sa atong kahimtang. Depende kun unsay dagan sa panahon, I think this will take in place until such time nga mausab ang dagan sa panahon, kaning huwaw nga naa karon maundang tungod sa uwan,” Tan said.  (FREEMAN)
