Caraga dengue cases down by 68%

BUTUAN CITY -- Dengue cases have significantly decreased in Caraga Region by more than 60 percent in the last 10 months as compared to the same period last year, records from the Department of Health in the region (DOH-Caraga) have shown.

A total of 2,254 dengue cases in the region have been reported from January to October this year, according to the health department’s Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (RESU).

RESU noted that the cases are 68.8 percent lower as compared to the 7,233 cases reported in the same period in 2016.

The agency also reported that compared to the last two quarters, no barangays were identified as dengue hotspot in the region.

More significantly, a 71 percent drop was recorded to the number of dengue-related deaths during the same period.

RESU reported that 10 persons died from deadly mosquito bites during the January-October period, with the age of the fatalities ranging from 2 to 72 years old. Majority of the recorded deaths were male (60 %). (Noel B. Najarro/PNA)
