Department of Education (DepEd) 7 Director Recardo Borgonia has said he will issue a memorandum reminding school heads to strengthen their guidance counseling program, following the suicide of a 13-year-old schoolboy in a southern Cebu town.
Ramzel Halos hanged himself at the back of his classroom in Maghanoy Elementary School in the southern town of Barili, Cebu Wednesday afternoon.
His parents, who have separated and have families of their own now, reunited for his burial Saturday at the town’s public cemetery.
Prior to the incident, Halos expressed his desire that his mother and father visit him and his siblings.
Halos was reportedly a candidate for school valedictorian.
Borgonia said every teacher should act as a guidance counselor.
â€Teachers are the children’s second parents,†he said, adding that teachers should closely observe their students’ behavior.
He said teachers should immediately talk to a pupil who shows signs of abnormal behavior.
But he said it’s difficult to tell what’s in a person’s mind.
“We can never really tell what is in the mind of a person. What is important is we are doing our best. We do our own share to respond to this kind of problem,†he said.
Borgonia also underscored the importance of family in deterring suicide among adolescents, saying the “family is the basic unit and the first source of security.â€
Last April, a 13-year old boy in Minglanilla, Cebu took his life after being scolded by his mother for getting low grades.
The following month, a 12-year-old girl in Pardo, Cebu City hanged herself inside their house allegedly after her mother called her dumb.
