CAMOTES ISLAND, Cebu, Philippines — Following its recent international recognition as the 2011 United Nations (UN) Sasakawa Awardee for Disaster Risk Reduction last May, the town of San Francisco in this island was recently visited by four government officials from Sri Lanka to observe and learn from its good practices.
San Francisco Vice Mayor Alfredo Arquillano Jr. said the four mayors from Sri Lanka visited the town’s solid waste management system, mangrove rehabilitation area, marine sanctuary and community driven program dubbed as “Purok System.â€
Arquillano said the successful implementation of the "Purok System†ordinance gained international recognition because it was able to empower the community down to the barangay level.
It can be recalled that early last month, Arquillano was invited by Sri Lanka for the launching of UN’s "Making Cities Resilient" Campaign where he served as one of the guest speaker.
“The visit of the four Sri Lankan government officials is an offshoot of my speaking engagement in their country,†he said.
Arquillano said he also personally invited the officials as “we are positioning the town as a learning hub for disaster risk reduction.†--
