The Filipino trait of sharing and caring known as the “bayanihan†spirit continues to draw support from local government units (LGUs) and private groups in the Calabarzon region comprising Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon provinces to aid victims and survivors of storm “Sendong†that severely devastated residential and commercial centers in Northern Mindanao.
Local government units here admitted that they too have once experienced the brunt and fury unleashed by past typhoons and disasters that wrought havoc and claimed lives in the Southern Tagalog region. And in times like these, “dapat lang magtulungan sa panahon ng kalamidadâ€, a Cavite official remarked.
Cavite had its share of calamities this year when heavy rains and strong winds of typhoon "Pedring" three months ago caused the storm surge and flash floods that inundated its coastal and low-lying towns.
Sending its financial assistance and assorted stuffs to the ravaged areas, the Cavite Communications Network, an organization of Cavite local government information and public affairs officers led by its president Khei Sanchez, has assisted and mobilized the cash and in-kind donations.
Ruel Francisco, adviser of the Cavite communications group and Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Cavite Information Center manager, said the gesture is heartwarming as cash and assistance poured in from Cavite towns such as Imus, Rosario and a host of other civic organizations, which had also experienced and overcome disasters.
Laguna, hardly hit by typhoons "Milenyo", "Ondoy", "Peping’ and "Santi," also poured in donations from its civic-spirited groups, religious organizations and firms. Cash and donations in kind such as assorted medicines from pharmaceutical firms and locators in the province’s economic zones and industrial parks were sent in directly to agencies involved in relief and rehabilitation works.
