A big fire struck the old city hall building of Butuan Friday morning, destroying several offices, including those of the vice mayor and the Sangguniang Panglungsod (SP) and its session hall.
The early morning fire happened while the city was still reeling from the effects of the heavy flooding since Sunday that displaced 15,875 families or 78,415 individuals and caused multi-million-peso damage in agricultural crops and infrastructure facilities.
"Several important documents were gutted in my office and other documents at the session hall," said Vice Mayor Lawrence Fortun.
The fire, which started at 4:45 a.m., gutted the Vice Mayor's Office, City Treasurer's Office, City Commission on Audit, Association of Barangay Council, SP Hall, Manpower's Office, Professional Regulation Commission, Transportation's Office and the Commission on Elections office.
The fire also destroyed several apprehended motorcycles that were under legal litigation.
The Butuan City Fire Department still cannot determine the cause of the fire which was declared under control at 6:30 a.m.
Initially, the city fire department estimated the damage at P15 million.
City Mayor Ferdinand Amante Jr. ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. (PNA)
