A road race between two buses in south Cebu ended in a head-on collision with a ten-wheeler trailer truck in Tuyan, Naga City yesterday.
Fourteen persons were killed, including both drivers of the truck and an EDC Liner mini-bus. The casualties included an 11-year-old girl.
Naga City Mayor Valdemar Chiong blamed the mishap on “reckless drivingâ€, a common complaint against passenger buses which speed through the south Cebu highway and sometimes engage each other in impromptu races.
“Very reckless. They drive too fast as if they own the road,†he said.
Chiong said he wanted to meet with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to discuss how to stop these dangerous road habits in south Cebu.
The minibus was running at 90 kph to 100 kph said traffic investigator PO1 Neil Villaceran.
Witnesses said the mini-bus driven by Aladin Law-it tried to overtake another bus when the accident occurred about 4:15 a.m. The bus crossed into the opposite lane and slammed into an oncoming Ocean Transport truck pulling a 40-foot van.
