A bus conductor was killed and 10 passengers were injured in a violent smash-up involving a mini-bus and two cargo trucks noontime Thursday in Barangay Cabugao Sur, Sta. Barbara, Iloilo.
The lone fatality was identified as Romeo Barrios, a bus conductor who succumbed to severe fractures on his head and breast.
Police investigation revealed that the mini-bus plying Calinog-Iloilo City and vice versa was on its way to Calinog town when the road mishap happened.
The mini-bus was tailing a motorcycle with two passengers riding in tandem.
Upon reaching Barangay Cabugao Sur, Sta. Barbara, the driver of the motorcycle signaled for a left turn but the bus driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed the motorcycle ahead. The mini-bus zigzagged and rammed a cargo truck loaded with a sound system before it crashed onto a soft drinks delivery truck being repaired in a repair shop beside the highway.
The violent smash-up caused the mini-bus to turn turtle, pinning down the bus conductor Romeo Barrios to death.
The victim was rushed to the nearby President Diosdado Macapagal Memorial Hospital in Sta. Bargara town where he was declared dead on arrival by the attending physician.
Injured were nine passengers on board the wayward bus and the owner of the repair shop identified as Jose Abunado.
Those injured are presently undergoing treatment in two hospitals in Iloilo City.
Meanwhile, the driver of the ill-fated mini-bus identified only as a certain alias Maoy immediately boarded a passing bus on its way to Calinog, Iloilo where he reportedly surrendered to the town’s police. (PNA)
