Brownout in Cebu
« on: October 25, 2010, 12:04:15 AM »
Power outages in Cebu are expected to continue as the Cebu-Negros-Panay grid expected a shortage of 230 megawatts, a power utility official said.

”There was an expected shortage from the Cebu-Negros-Panay grid of 230 megawatts (mw) due to limited generation in the Visayas and no power import from Luzon,” said Ethel Natera, Visayan Electric Co. (Veco) spokesperson.

She said the maintenance work on the Luzon-Visayas link or the High Voltage Direct Current, which is owned and operated by the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines, continued over the weekend.

But with only a day before the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections, Department of Energy-Visayas Director Labios, in a radio dyLA interview, said he can’t assure there will be no brownouts on Monday.

However, he hopes there won’t be a shortage as it is a special non-working holiday.

As of Friday, the Pilinpinon Geothermal Power Plant which generates 35 mw was still down.

Natera said Veco, which services residents in metro Cebu, was able to distribute power form independent power producers and Participating Interruptible Load Customers (PICs).

The PICs are Veco customers that use their own generators instead of getting power from the utility firm.

The two-hour power interruptions in the Veco franchise areas or Manual Load Dropping were caused by a shortfall of 41.32 mw as of the 2:20 p.m. demand computation on Friday.
