Police authorities here are hunting down a certain Jun Farinas from Metro Manila who has been reportedly brokering the sale of used cars to armed groups for use as getaway vehicles in kidnapping wealthy Filipino-Chinese traders.
The name of Farinas, whose is also known in the underworld here as “Pulang Puso,†surfaced last week after the abduction by seven gunmen of businessman Adin Yu, whose clan operates the oldest hardware store at the city’s main commercial district.
“We have been hearing stories from people that worship in mosques under our respective watch that there is this Mr. Farinas that is helping kidnappers here acquire second hand cars from Metro Manila as their getaway vehicles,†said Ustadz Usman Esmael, a Muslim religious leader.
Senior Supt. Willie Dangane, Cotabato City police chief, said most of the recovered getaway cars of kidnappers now in police custody were found to be registered in Metro Manila and Luzon.
“We’re doing our best to know the owners of these getaway cars and we end our paper trail to Metro Manila," Dangane said.
Major Marlowe Patria, civil-military relations chief of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division, said religious leaders and local officials in Maguindanao have lately been active in gathering information on the movements of suspected kidnappers in the province.
Ustadz Jaafar Ali, a key official of the National Ulama Council of the Philippines, declared as “satanic†the activities of kidnappers and extortion rings in Central Mindanao.
Two Chinese traders here, Nelson Tay and Conchita Tan, were also snatched by kidnappers in August and, subsequently, in September respectively. - source: Philippine News Agency
