http://www.sunstar.com.ph/KIDAPAWAN CITY -- An official said 10 people have drowned and two are missing in Sultan sa Barongis town in Maguindanao province after their canoe capsized in a marsh during strong winds.
Mayor Allandatu Angas said the canoe overturned around 6 p.m. Monday in the Liguasan Marsh, a remote swamp region in Maguindanao, about 900 kilometers (560 miles) south of Manila.
Angas, the mayor of Sultan sa Barongis town, said 10 bodies were recovered Tuesday, including two children. All of the dead and missing were related.
Among the fatalities were Panunggo Kudtog, 63; Baikong Kudtog, 30; Paano Kudtog, 7; Montoki Kudtog, 9; and Seno Blah, 40, all residents of Barangay Kudal, Pagalungan, Maguindanao.
Their bodies were fished from the mouth of the marsh, reports said.
Angas said there are six survivors. The accident happened on the surface of the marsh at the tri-boundary of Maguindanao, North Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat provinces during stormy weather.
The banca was overloaded, said Angas, adding that the passengers were on their way home to Pagalungan town after attending a family gathering in nearby Sultan sa Barongis town when the accident occurred.
The marsh is crisscrossed by rivers and covers a large area of about 220,000 hectares (543,620 acres) in the southern Mindanao region. (AP/Malu C. Manar/Sunnex)
