The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Regional Office 3 has disclosed that the Arayat-Apalit setback levee serving as Pampanga River's second line of defense is soon to be rehabilitated to save thousands of Kapampangans from impending danger, particularly during the rainy season.
Engineer Gilbert Cruz of the DPWH region 3 planning division, said their department has already allocated funds amounting to at least P100 million for Arayat- Apalit setback levee.
Cruz said the rehabilitation project will start in Arayat town in barangay Guemasan going to the municipalities of Candaba, San Luis, San Simon, Apalit and could probably extend to Masantol and Macabebe areas.
Last Friday, DPWH officials, together with Provincial Board Member Ricardo Yabut, committee chair on Public Works and Engr. Juanito Reguyal, officer-in-charge of the Mt. Pinatubo Rehabilitation, conducted a joint ocular inspection in Arayat-Apalit setback levee to determine the areas which required immediate attention.
Yabut observed that some shanties and other stone houses have already been established within the perimeter of the Arayat-Apalit setback levee, which, he said, should be regulated by local officials in order not to delay the proposed rehabilitation. =pna
