The Department of Education (DepEd) in Negros Oriental is filing an official complaint before the DepEd division of Lapu-lapu City in Cebu province, this year’s host of the regional schools press conference, for what had happened to their children during the five-day regional contest.
Dr. Celedonia Notarte who acted as supervisor of the Negros Oriental delegation numbering a total of 166, lamented the poor catering services and accommodation they had in Lapu-Lapu City, threatening the health of their children.
At first, they were impressed with the set-up but to their dismay, their children were given what they believe was spoiled meat and bread in the morning, she said.
It was repeated at noon time, when their food tasted bitter, according to Notarte. He reported that after eating the food, some of their children vomited and had stomach ache.
In the evening, some children had opted to eat only rice and drink water while others spent their own money to eat outside the school.
In the afternoon, Notarte tried to contact the caterer but to no avail and to raise the matter to the Department of Health.
The DepEd official is urging the city government of Lapu-Lapu and the school division to investigate the alleged poisoning of the children, in seeking answers to what transpired during the regional schools press conference in the city. - pna
