Bacolod mayor underscores political, collective will in his state of city report
BACOLOD CITY, July 2 (PNA) -- Mayor Monico Puentevella underscored the importance of political and collective will in sustaining the city’s progress during his State of Booming Bacolod Address Wednesday at the People’s House lobby.
Among those the mayor cited is his confrontation with the problem of the three main markets, illegal vending, and the decongestion of traffic.
“Some say it was an impossible task, some say it was political suicide. But we had to fight the bullet, grab the bull by the horns, and face the music head-on,†said Puentevella, although he admitted that there are still “so much work to be done.â€
The mayor added: “Political will alone cannot have the impact that it hopes to achieve if not complemented with our collective will,†he added.
Meanwhile, Puentevella said one of the key reasons why Bacolod is booming are the trailblazers “who have planted the seeds of trade and industry†when Bacolod was just starting.
These include the chain of Lopue’s Department Stores and the Filipino-Chinese and Indian community “whose entrepreneurial spirit have shaped our local economy.
“Bacolod is booming, and this is our future,†the mayor added.
Puentevella also mentioned some “firsts†in the city such as the hosting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit on Disaster Risk Finance last April, the expansion of businesses, and the influx of business process outsourcing (BPO) companies.
The mayor also thanked Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. for the creation of the Negros First Cyber Centre.
The multi-billion investments of Ayala Land Inc, and Megaworld Corporation, and DoubleDragon Properties were also noted by the mayor as the reasons why Bacolod is slowly being regarded as one of the country’s leading real estate and business hubs.
Moreover, Puentevella stressed that although the future is within Bacolod’s reach, he still called on the community to work together to achieve more and realize the dream for the city.
He added that part of the agenda is a second Education Summit and Solid Waste Management symposium as well as improving the dissemination of basic services, more roads and wider bridges, healthcare facilities, and public-private partnerships.
