DILG distributes 40 patrol jeepneys in Leyte
TACLOBAN CITY, Nov. 6 (PNA) -- Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Mel Senen Sarmiento led on Thursday the distribution of police patrol jeeps for various towns of Leyte province.
During the blessing and ceremonial turnover at the Tacloban Airport, 10 jeeps were handed over to town mayors. The remaining 30 units were shipped to the city Thursday night.
The patrol jeeps will boost the capability of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to fight crime.
“These patrol jeeps are one of the outcomes of Daang Matuwid. You are very lucky because in the past, the national government does not provide police cars. Under the Aquino administration, these cars are shipped directly to your province,†Sarmiento told the mayors.
Sr. Supt. Franco P. Simborio, chief of the Leyte police provincial office expressed appreciation for the patrol jeeps that will be of big help to their police operations.
“The distribution is very timely for the implementation of the Oplan Lambat Sibat program of the PNP, which has proven to be effective in the operational function. Undeniably, the jeeps are expedient and imperative in the everyday function of the entire Leyte PPO,†Simborio said.
The jeep distribution, which started during the leadership of former DILG Secretary Mar Roxas, is part of the PHP1.3-billion nationwide project. It provided 1,470 units of 4 x 2 patrol jeeps of Mahindra enforcer model.
Chief Supt. Cedrick G. Train, officer-in-charge of the Eastern Visayas police regional office, said the purchase of jeeps underwent a rigorous process to ensure that there’s no corruption involved and the vehicles are of good quality.
Sarmiento, who arrived at the Tacloban airport late Thursday afternoon, also distributed patrol jeeps in Biliran and Eastern Samar prior to the activity in Leyte. (PNA)
