Army intensifies security ops vs NPA in Davao Region

DAVAO CITY -- The Army's 10th Infantry Division and the Police Regional Office (PRO) 11 have intensified security operations in Davao Region following the killing of a police officer in Davao City by suspected New People’s Army (NPA) liquidation squad.

Maj. Gen. Noel Clement, commander of 10th Infantry Division, said the NPA is targetting to abduct members of the security forces and the police.

"I have directed our troops to be vigilant not only during operations but also during administrative movement and when visiting their families," Clement said.

He said soldiers on the ground have intensified their combat operations and responded to civilians’ report on NPA formation in a certain areas.

In a separate interview, PRO) 11 Director Chief Supt. Manuel Gaerlan revealed he alerted all city, municipal police stations and provincial offices to preempt NPA-perpetrated activities.

On Monday morning, PO3 Wilfredo Garol Jr of Baguio Police Station was shot to death by suspected members of NPA hit squad in Barangay New Valencia, Tugbok district.

Also on Monday, two police officers rendering duty at the mountainous area in Placer town of Surigao del Norte were abducted by members of the NPA.

The abducted officers were identified as PO2 Alfredo Lauro Degamon Jr. and PO2 John Paul Mondaya Doverte, both assigned at Placer Municipal Police Station. (Rhoda Grace Saron/PNA)
