SAN JOSE De BUENAVISTA, Antique -- Antique Governor Rhodora J. Cadiao on Monday vowed to again petition for the increase of the daily wage of Antiqueno sugar migrant workers or sacadas in Negros Occidental.
“I will work it out with the Regional Development Council 6 to increase their wage,” she said.
The governor, who has seen improvement in the living conditions of the sacadas during “Bisita Sacada in Negros Occidental”, expressed pity on the sugar migrant workers who have to work hard harvesting sugar cane under the scorching heat of the sun and share among them a measly pay of PHP140 per ton per day.
Cadiao commiserates with the plight of sugar migrant workers who have to work hard harvesting the sugar cane under the scorching heat of the sun and load these on a dump truck but yet receiving only a measly pay of PHP140 per ton per day.
Cadiao, who is currently the RDC-6 chairperson, said she intends to increase the wage to PHP200 per ton per day.
Likewise, she is appealing to the landowners in Negros Occidental, in case of death among the migrant workers, to also assist in bringing back the body r to the province for burial. She cited previous cases that the government of Antique had to step in to return the body.
“What is good now is that the sacadas are more aware of their rights and where to run in case they need help,” Cadiao said.
She said that since the first “Bisita Sacada”, about three years ago, the Antiqueno sugar migrants are being briefed by the Department of Labor and Employment of their labor rights and protection. (PNA) NOVEMBER 2017
