Thousands Affected by Philippine Typhoon Juan

A 60-year-old man drowned and at least 882 families or 6,168 individuals were affected by heavy rains and strong winds brought about by super typhoon “Juan” in five provinces in Central Luzon.

Disaster authorities reported that Roberto Alsaibar, 60, drowned while crossing the river at Sitio Boring, Barangay Puncan, Carranglan, Nueva Ecija during heavy rains on Monday.

A motorist identified as Rami Alkadra, 25, of Malolos City, Bulacan was wounded when hit by a flying roof due to strong winds around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Alkadra was driving a motorcycle along Barangay Tikay, Malolos City when the accident occurred, the report said.

The Regional Office of Civil Defense (OCD) also reported that there are 882 families in the region affected by floods.

The affected families number 300 in Dilasag, 30 in Dinalungan and nine in Casiguran, all in Aurora; 66 in two coastal barangays of Malolos City; 78 in Carrangalan, Nueva Ecija; 283 in San Clemente, 10 in Paniqui, both in Tarlac; and 106 in three coastal barangays in Pampanga.

Neri Amparo, OCD-3 director, said that as of Tuesday, there were 411 families or 2,172 individuals evacuated to safer grounds.

Amparo said the affected residents in Aurora were evacuated to Dinalugan Central Schoo, Dilagudi Elementary School, Lawang Elementary School, Ura Elementary School, Pateco Zonemills, Multi-purpose hall, Binaoan Day Care Center and Ditingyan Barangay Hall.

In Bulacan, affected residents were evacuated and temporarily sheltered at Atlag Elementary School.

Displaced families in Nueva Ecija were temporarily evacuated at Puncan Elementary School in Carangglan town.

In Tarlac, those affected residents were taken to Bacoa Elementary School, the report said.

The OCD also reported that Barangay Pit-ao in San Clemente, Tarlac was hit by floods from three to four feet deep.

Three coastal barangays in Macabebe, Pampanga, were also under one to two feet deep water.

The report also said that all the national roads and bridges in Central Luzon are passable to all types of vehicles except Nueva Ecija-Aurora road Km 180 Cabatangan river and Romulo highway in Camiling, Tarlac (Cacamilingan Sur and Tuec Section) due to three-foot deep flood water. (PNA)
