DOST Eastern Visayas assistant regional director Ernesto Granada said initial survey results point to some areas in the three provinces as ideal sites for setting up of internet facility given the strong presence of TV wide space signal.
The said public Wi-Fi, according to Granada, is a TV wide space technology intended for public to use for oral communication like video calls and written communication like e-mails or chats.
“This plan will be made easy for people to be more knowledgeable in the news updates. Likewise, education will no longer be a burden for the individuals who have no internet connection,†the official said
The facility will also facilitate more affordable means of communication of people in urban centers and rural areas through the use of social media.
This project will be implemented in the region after the pilot testing in Bohol province and Luneta Park this year.
Public plazas have been identified for the installation of public Wi-Fi. The internet facility will be maintained by local government units.
The project aims to bring Internet connectivity to class 4, 5, and 6 towns in the country.
Recently, the project got a PHP3 billion upgrade from the Senate, expanding the coverage nationwide. Originally, the initiative was designed to cover only town plazas of 748 class poor towns, with a budget of PHP334 million. (PNA)
