The 5th Kialegnon Festival kicked off here Monday morning with a fun run participated in by more than 700 local officials,staff and residents.
Mayor Jess Lumanog led the event that started and ended at the public market square.This was the first time that a fun run was listed as part of the week-long festival that will culminate on Sept. 28.
Other activities during the week-long festivities are Lumba sa Karabao, Karabao Make-over, Lumba sa Kabayo, Pig Catching, Bamboo Pole Climbing, and Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan (street dancing.
The festival name came from the word Kialeg, a tribute to Datu Kialeg, a legendary B’laan leader who fought against bandits in his time to protect the community which named after him.
Lumanog said "it is but fitting to celebrate the very rich and distinct culture and tradition of our indigenous peoples."
Part of the weeklong celebration is the “Search for Byaning ng Kialegnon 2012â€, the competition to recognize the beauty of lumad women in Magsaysay.
“(The event was also a thanksgiving celebration) for the bountiful harvest in our town. September is our harvest time,†he said.
