A 41-year-old manicurist was arrested by police arrested at a port in Leyte while transporting Cebu-made firearms believed to be intended for partisan armed groups (PAGs) in the province, a ranking police official said in his report to Camp Crame.
Police Regional Office-8 (PRO-8) director Chief Supt. Ray Lañada said that Pilar Luzano, a widow and a resident of Barangay Suba, Danao City, had just disembarked from a passenger ferry at the Ferry Terminal in Sito Pingag, Barangay Matlang, Isabel, Leyte when intercepted at a checkpoint by elements of the Isabel Municipal Police Station on Sunday noon.
Found in her possession were three cal. 45 pistols, one cal. 45 revolver, five cal. 38 revolvers, a cal. 22 magnum revolver, assorted magazine assemblies and two silencers for cal. 45 pistol.
According to Lañada, criminal charges will be filed against Luzano for illegal possession of firearms and violation of the Omnibus Election Code.
Also on Sunday, police arrested Chairman Antonio Deocampo of Barangay Daraga, Placer, Masbate for possession of illegal guns.
A composite police team from the Masbate Police Provincial Office, PNP Special Action Force and Special Task Force Masbate led by Senior Inspector Elmer Decena searched Deocampo's residence on Sunday morning by virtue of a Warrant of Arrest issued by Judge Nilo Barsaga of RTC Branch 46 of Masbate City.
Confiscated from Deocampo were an Elisco M16 rifle, a Winchester M14 rifle, a 9mm Intratec KG9 machine pistol, and assorted ammunition.
On Saturday night, police and military troops manning a Comelec checkpoint were fired upon by some 20 armed men in Barangay TUmahubong, Sumisip, Basilan. No casualties were reported among the government security forces who returned fire prompting the attacker to withdraw.
Reports reaching the PNP National Operations Center said an IED explosion preceded the strafing and shooting at the position of government security forces by armed men believed led by Whyms Wakil and Rolly Ikib, both sub-leaders of the terrorist Abu Sayyaf Group.
Troops are now in hot pursuit operations against all the perpetrators believed to be hired by unscrupulous politicians for election purposes. (PNA)
